On January 24, 1974, the Most Reverend J. Carroll McCormick, D.D., then Bishop of Scranton, established Saint Gregory's Parish, a new ecclesiastical district created in part through a reconfiguration of the geographical boundaries of the Parish of Our Lady of the Snows, Clarks Summit, and designed to serve the growing population of the Abingtons.
Reverend Monsignor Charles Zazzera, former Director for the Propagation of the Faith, Diocese of Scranton, was named as the first pastor for the parish. A building and lot was purchased adjacent to the Our Lady of Peace Convent on North Abington Road, Clarks Green, which would serve as the site for the new church.
Facilities of Our Lady of Peace school were utilized by the clergy and parishioners as planning began for the new Saint Gregory's Church and Rectory. On March 12, 1974, a general meeting of parish members was held; Diocesan guidlines were presented including identification of committees which would be necessary to support construction of the church complex.
By May, 1974, a Steering Committee was formed to provide expertise and general support to the pastor. Also structered were committees for Administration, Finance, Planning and Building, Communications, Social Activities, and a parish Historian was appointed. The deed covering purchase of the church site was filed at the Lackawanna County Courthouse in May.
Four hundred and fifty parish families were surveyed to determine preferences for design of the new Saint Gregory's Church. Survey results were considered along with the recommendations made by the Planning and Building Committee which had undertaken extensive travel and research into modern church planning and construction. These recommendations were discussed during countless meetings and consultations with the architectural firm for the project. Final building plans were submitted to the Diocese and approved by Bishop McCormick in Febuary of 1975.
Parishoners shared in the founding of Saint Gregory's Church through the medium of pledges and contributions to the successful Founders Day Program held in May of 1975. Bidding and builder selection was completed in June and official ground breaking ceremonies were conducted in July of 1975.
With construction underway, establishment of a Parish Council provided for involvement of parishioners in the management of the many activities of Saint Gregory's Church. A written constitution was adopted by the Parish Council in February of 1976 and a special Ad Hoc Dedication Committee was named for planning, coordination and documentation of all dedication activities in cooperation with the church pastor.
The Blessing of the Main Altar and Stations of the Cross took place on August 14, 1976. Cornerstone ceremonies, the Solemn Blessing of the Church, and a Pontifical Dedication Mass were held in the new facility on Sunday, August 15, 1976. A dedication dinner, held at the University of Scranton Student Center, followed the Dedication Mass and parishoners celebrated the realization of their efforts as a new chapter in the history of The Church of Saint Gregory was begun.
After the church was completed and dedicated in 1976, Monsignor Zazzera was
transferred in September 1977. Monsignor Louis our weekend assistant at that
time became our Pastor. This was his first pastoral assignment. This September marks our twenty year anniversary with Monsignor as Pastor. Prior,
his assignment at Saint Gregory's Monsignor Louis was Judicial Vicar at the
Diocesan Tribunal in the Diocese of Scranton.
