Lenten Symbols
Symbols are items, articles, drawings, etc., that convey an idea that remind us of something. There are many "symbols that we use during Lent. We have listed six. Can you think of other "symbols" that we use to help us celebrate other special times?
Butterfly:
Butterflies are for change. A caterpillar changes to a butterfly. Little by little, as we enter into the Lenten mystery, we become transformed into the beautiful person that God is calling us to both be and become!
Pretzels:
In the early church, people prayed with their arms crossed over their chest instead of folding their hands. The pretzel's shape reminded them and remind us to pray, and to give thanks.
Crosses:
Jesus died on the cross, so our sins would be forgiven. Looking at the cross reminds us to seek forgiveness and reflect on our actions. It is also a reminder of the great love our Heavenly Father has so us.
Hearts:
Hearts represent love. During Lent, we try to love God and others more by doing good, in everything we do and say.
Flowers:
Flowers represent growing. During Lent, we grow ever more beautifully into the likeness of the Lord. We grow in our faith and we grow as people within our faith.
Hands:
Hands represent helping. With our hands we can do nice things for others. We can also share when others show kindness to us.
